Drawn-Out Stories:
The Art of the Graphic Novel

stripe

Graphic NovelsGraphic novels have exploded in popularity in the past few years. The St. Charles Public Library has had a graphic novel collection in the Young Adult Department for some years, and we are now starting to actively develop a collection geared to adults. Adult fiction graphic novels, which are generally stand alone stories told through illustrations, all have the call number 741.5 There also are an increasing number of nonfiction books published in this format. Although not novels in the traditional sense, they are commonly referred to as graphic novels due to their graphic format. In our collection, these books are shelved in the subject area that they cover. (Hint: If you are searching for a graphic novel on a particular subject, try entering the subject and adding “comic books, strips, etc.” before clicking on subject.  You also can search the subject “graphic nonfiction” to browse titles.)
