This first-grader avoids books whenever possible. She doesn't understand her school librarian, who loves books so much that she dresses in costumes to read them. Then, to the girl's horror, she is asked to share a book she loves with her class for Book Week. She asks her mom if they can leave town, but her mom says, 'There's a librarian in every town.' Will she find a book she can tolerate? Could a book ever be gross enough for her to love?

What are the students in Room 207 going to do? Their sweet and loving teacher, Miss Nelson is missing and was replaced with the terrible and mean substitute teacher, Miss Viola Swamp. Miss Swamp always wears an ugly black dress, yells at them, raps on the desk with her ruler, and loads them down with homework. Even though they had misbehaved badly for Miss Nelson: throwing spitballs, squirming in their desks, being rude during storytime, and flying paper airplanes, the students of Room 207 would do anything to get her back. What would it take to get Miss Nelson to return?

This book is a retelling of the traditional Ukrainian tale in which a boy's lost mitten becomes a home from the cold for more and more animals. The repetition of what the animals say and the realistic looking illustrations make this book a great retelling.
