It was the ninth inning, the bases were loaded, two outs, and the score was 3 to 0. Andy Oyler was up to bat. He was the shortest player in the whole league. Andy was about to get his first pitch when the sky opened up and rain flooded the field. The umpire delayed the game for a while but started it up again just to finish it out. As the pitch approached, Andy felt it was going to hit him but instead it hit his bat. It took everyone by surprise. Where was the ball? The littlest player became an unforgettable hero for his team.

My Dog is As Smelly As Dirty Socks: And Other Funny Family Portraits

A creative young girl draws a picture for her teacher. It's a typical family: Mom, Dad, big brother, baby brother, and the family dog. Although the teacher is quite complementary of the artwork, our student feels it doesn't describe enough how her family REALLY is. She designs a unique collage of each person. Her Mom, she explains, is as bright as the brightest light, and she shows us a light bulb. Her mom is also as tasty as a cookie, and a cookie is shown, no, a croissant - just that delicious! She goes on to describe her whole family in the same inventive manner, even how the dog smells. Can you guess?

Winner of the 2003 Caldecott Medal, My Friend Rabbit tells the story of Mouse's friendship with Rabbit. 'My friend Rabbit means well. But whatever he does, wherever he goes, trouble follows.' What ensues is one such instance of trouble, where Rabbit loses Mouse's toy plane in a tree. When Rabbit calls out, 'Not to worry, Mouse. I've got an idea,' we know that the proper response is to worry. Rabbit's idea involves piling all the wild animals on top of one another to retrieve the plane. You can guess what happens next! Most of the meaning of the story is apparent in the illustrations, and a few well-chosen words make clear that Rabbit is the classic troublesome, yet likable, character many of us have encountered.

'Daisy's skin is brown. Agnes's skin is white. But...they both have cheeky pink tongues!' My Nose, Your Nose details what is different about one child from another, and then tells us what they share in common. With vivid, simple illustrations and a basic, repetitive structure, this title has great appeal for very young children.
