Ranging from situations about the earliest years of elementary school (the first day) to the latter years (of word problems and science projects), these poems depict common and uncommon experiences in attending school. Some poems are humorous, describing ridiculous, impossible, or unexpected situations (such as the science project to make a brother disappear or the band teacher whose personality changes once he begins wearing earplugs). Others describe real problems, like jealousy or fear of public speaking. The last poem, designed for two voices, is a description of a best friendship. These simple rhymes depicting silly and serious situations (all with illustrations) are good for reading or performing.

Animal Poems is a collection of poetry inspired by different animals, including a snail, whale, bear, and porcupine. Though presented in picture book format, these lovely poems are subtle and nuanced and are most likely too sophisticated for younger children to fully grasp. Steve Jenkins' beautiful cut-paper collage illustrations make each page come alive and will be enjoyed by all.

There is a lot to look at in this delicately stitched picture book. Clothes, toys, and people in a baby's world are accompanied by bits of children's songs and poetry. This will be welcomed in any home with a new baby - especially if there is an older brother or sister to pour over the detailed pictures.

'Basho and the River Stones' by Tim Myers is a story based on the teachings of one of Japan's most revered poets, Matsuo Basho. Through the antics of a greedy fox, Matsuo introduces us to his unique form of poetry, a haiku. He also teaches us that the simple beauties of the world, give our lives 'radiance'. Enjoy this gentle story of generosity and friendship.

This is a wonderful collection of short poems about a variety of animals, from a boa to a walrus. For example, from the poem titled The Lobster,'So be careful /On vacation /Not to step on /This crustacean' or from The Kangaroo, 'While baby's asleep inside its kangaroom.' Each poem is illustrated with a fanciful painting of the animal.
