Cheesie Mack Is Not a Genius or Anything

Cheesie Mack is nicknamed this because he loves mac and cheese, though hardly ever eats it now. He is an eleven year old boy who always tries to do the right thing. Somehow his best friend, Georgie, ropes him into trouble now and then. When Cheesie and Georgie are caught with mice at their fifth grade graduation, they are forced to stand next to their teacher for the whole graduation-how embarrassing! Interspersed throughout the story, Cheesie asks the readers to go to his website to weigh in on things, such as their favorite food and if they have unique names for their grandparents. This book has the right amount of quirkiness to engage reluctant readers and the right amount of interesting facts about things, such as coin collecting, to captivate information seeking readers.

At their home in the Everglades, Wahoo Cray helps his father, Mickey, to care for the many wild animals his father has collected over the years, such as Alice, an alligator that he raised from infancy, a boa constrictor, an orphaned bobcat and a howler monkey named Jocko. Mickey Cray needs more help since an iguana fell from a tree onto his head, giving him a concussion which has led to migraines and double-vision and leaving Mickey unable to perform his work as an animal wrangler for documentaries and reality shows. As soon as Wahoo's mother leaves for China to teach Chinese to American executives to earn money to pay the mortgage, Mickey is contacted by a reality television show, Expedition Survival! to provide animals for an episode to take place in the Everglades. Wahoo soon realizes that the show's star, Derek Badger, is a fake, but that turns out to be the least of their troubles. When Mickey and Wahoo travel to the Everglades to help film part of the episode in the wild, they pick up a girl from Wahoo's class, Tuna Gordon, who is running from her drunk, abusive father. All of these people stumbling around in the Everglades' marshes make a hectic and surprising adventure.
