To keep him safe, Nick's mother sends him off to Burma, to live with his father on the family's teak plantation. Nick is intrigued by Burma and especially by the timber elephants on the plantation. Intrigue is soon taken over by fear, as Nick's father is taken prisoner by Japanese solders. Nick becomes a servant to the Japanese and wonders what will become of him and his father. Unlike all the other gray elephants, Elmer is brightly colored in a patchwork design. He's the life of the party, and he loves to make his elephant friends laugh. One day, he starts to feel sad that he doesn't look like the rest of the herd, so he sets off on a journey to change his color. He finds a way to turn himself gray, but no one recognizes him, and no one is laughing anymore. What will Elmer do?
