Little Bo, otherwise known as Bonnie Boadicea, is a beautiful gray ship's cat who has been lucky to have many adventures while at sea with her owner, Billy. In a previous adventure, the two foiled the plot to kidnap Lady Goodlad. Her grateful husband invited them to become members of the crew of his yacht, Legend. To recover from the scare of the near kidnapping, Lord and Lady Goodlad are sailing to Italy. There, Bo and Billy have many adventures in famous Italian cities: Pisa, where they attend a circus and Bo becomes part of the lion tamer's act; and Rome, where Bo finds another of her six siblings; and two of the beautiful Italian islands. All along, they are being followed by a pair of mysterious men whose intentions may be malicious. Read about Little Bo's other adventures in Little Bo, the Story of Bonnie Boadicea, Little Bo in Paris, and the final story, Little Bo in London.

Little Prince

Antoine de Saint-Exupery (2010), 112 pages
Illustrated by Joann Sfar
Audience: 4th Grade - 8th Grade
Category: Classic, Fiction, Graphic Novel
Add Your Comments | Add to MyBookList | Email Review
This little book about the adventures of a young prince from his own planet as he ventures out into the wider universe is beloved for its deeper story of what is truly important in life. This graphic novel adaptation makes concrete many of the stories inside it, adding richness to the situations contained within. While surprisingly faithful to the text (of the English translation in nongraphic format I examined), the addition of pictures in a frame-by-frame telling of the tale brings an immediacy to the series of dilemmas the little prince and the pilot he meets face, allowing the reader to more fully explore them. In the same way adapting a book to film adds an interpretation that the reader makes on one's own when reading, this transfer to another artistic medium, the graphic novel, adds something that those who love the tale may value. Of course, those who love the tale are unlikely to abandon the textual telling for this one, but the graphic novel, while faithful to the story in the original, is also a work of art in its own right that lovers of the story may also embrace.

Little Rat Makes Music

Monika Bang-Campbell (2007), 48 pages
Illustrated by Molly Bang
Audience: 1st Grade - 3rd Grade
Category: Animal, Easy Reader, Fiction

Little Rat is fascinated with the violinists at the orchestra. Then, Little Rat and Mama Rat come across a group of other young animals playing violins, and Little Rat decides to take lessons. It isn't quite what she expects: her teacher is gruff, her violin makes squawking noises, and she doesn't like to practice. Will Little Rat ever find a way to make beautiful music? This early reader rings true to the experiences a young person may have as a beginning student of music. (Reading Level: 3.5)
