Brian Higman dreads revealing that he hasn't finished his 'sloppy copy' of his writing assignment (his teacher's name for a rough draft). His teacher isn't known for her sympathy, and he's already received one zero for not doing his work. When the time comes, he tries to distract her by telling a story about why he couldn't do it. As he tells it, he draws her and the class into the tale of his quest to buy a used guitar before the neighborhood-famous Harry Harrington buys it first. The longer he distracts his teacher with the story, the more hope he has that he'll get away without failing. Brian's story within a story is entertaining, and the resolution of the tale is satisfying. The book includes Brian's tips on how to write well.

The Sloth family loves to rest, relax, and most importantly, take things slow. One day, the Sloth Family decides to get a pet. At the pet store, they think that the turtle is too slow, the fish is too boring, but the little puppy that is just sleeping in his cage seems,'just right!' For a little while, everything seems to be going along just fine. That is until their little puppy starts doing puppy things like: chewing, running, and making a mess! What is the Sloth family going to do? Will they be able to take care of 'puppy' or will they need to give him up? A humorous story for the Level 3 reader.

Mr. and Mrs. Farmer think that Pig is the BEST pig in the world. Pig likes to eat, run, and sleep-but most of all he LOVES to sit and sink down low in the mud. One day farmer's wife goes on a cleaning spree. She cleans the house, the barn, the stables, the chicken coop, and unfortuantely all of pig's mud. This makes pig mad, so he runs away in search of some mud. Follow pig on his quest for mud as he experiences one misadventure after another to its hysterical conclusion. This is another book for the beginning reader to love by Arnold Lobel.

Will has always had to take care of his twin brother, Denny, who has Down syndrome, while helping out on his family's ranch. They each have a small, white scar on their fingers from the time they became blood brothers, as well as twin brothers. Will loves his brother, but feels that Denny is standing in the way of his dreams. Will runs away to the rodeo, hoping to win some money and get a job as a professional cowboy. However, Denny catches up with Will and won't go back home. While Will is trying to figure out how to get Denny home safely, Denny almost drowns and gets bitten by a rattlesnake. Will and Denny ride to the house of a doctor, who's a friend of their father, where Will learns just how much he has meant to Denny and Denny to him. As for the rodeo and Will's dream for the future, read the book to see if Will is as good as he thinks he is.
