As an eleven-year-old girl living in Revolutionary New York City, Sophia feels strongly that America should be free from British rule. Her father has returned injured from the fighting and she doesn't know where her brother William, who was also among the rebel soldiers, has disappeared. When Sophia and her mother are told that they will be housing a British officer, they feel they must display the red ribbon of British loyalty so that they can survive. Sophia cannot help but feel an attraction toward the courteous, elegant soldier, Lieutenant John Andre. William is discovered to be held prisoner, first in a sugar house and then on one of the infamous British prison ships in New York's harbor. When William dies in captivity, Sophia vows that one day she will have revenge. Four years later she has her chance, when she is asked to spy on the very same John Andre, who has risen to the rank of Major. This book is written as though Sophia herself has written it, in explanation of her part in the American Revolutionary War.
