Liz is helping her grandmother pack and clean the old house that has been in the family for years. She awakens suddenly in the middle of the night when she hears a voice. A blue light highlights a woman in an old-fashioned dress that seems to be beckoning her to follow. When Liz travels back to log-cabin days she meets her ancestors, and on one visit is able to provide important help for a sick baby. This gentle story would appeal to readers interested in history, time travel, and benevolent ghosts.

The Bluebonnet Girl by Michael Lind is a retelling of the original story, An Indian Legend of the Bluebonnet. In this beautifully told story, a little girl sacrifices her little doll with a blue headdress, her prized possession, to end the drought on the prairie to save her people. Due to her selflessness and willingness to do what no one else in her Comanche tribe was willing to do, give up something that was truly precious, she was rewarded with an end to the drought and a field of bluebonnets. This story engages the reader with its beautiful illustrations and verse.

Ember's summer is off to a rough start. Her trailer home burns to the ground in the middle of the night. The family got out safely, but they were not able to salvage anything except the pajamas they were wearing. With nothing but one set of clothes each and a few tents purchased with a small gift of money from her Grandmother, the family finds a place to live in a campground. To top things off, Ember has not seen her beloved dog since the night of the fire. She believes her best friend set the fire. She is terrified that people will find out they are homeless or worse, that her family is pagan. While swimming in the campground lake and collecting black berries to sell in order to buy food and pay for the campsite, Ember's path crosses with several others. Does she dare chance friendship again?
