Molly Williams is thrilled to have made the baseball team since her father has recently died. Her killer knuckleball earns her the role as pitcher but it isn't easy being the only girl on the team. One of her teammates 'accidentally' throws a ball at her shin and one day she arrives at her locker to see it covered with a hurtful graffiti message. Molly feels like just going back to the girls' softball team. What would you do if you were Molly?

Summer is Gloriana Hemphill's favorite time of year. She loves going to the Hanging Moss community pool every day. She loves playing card games with her sister, Jesslyn. She especially loves the 4th of July with the parade, the fireworks and the pool party for her July 4th birthday. But in the summer of 1964, everything seems to change. Her sister doesn't seem to want to play with her at all. All she has time for are the girls in the pep squad and hanging around with a new boy in town. Then, they close the swimming pool, 'for repairs,' they say even though there is nothing wrong with it. Could it be because of the freedom fighters that have come down from up north threatening to change the way things have always been in this southern town? Can Glory have any kind of birthday without her pool party? A lot of things change in Hanging Moss during the summer of 1964, including Gloriana.

Gooney Bird Greene needs to be in the center of everything, from her seat in the classroom, to conversations, and of course, in telling 'absolutely true' stories. She is a very unusual girl from a faraway place who wears pajamas and cowboy boots and that is only the beginning of her second grade adventures at Watertower Elementary School. This is the first book about Gooney Bird. Follows her adventures in Gooney Bird and the Room Mother, Gooney the Fabulous, and Gooney Bird is so Absurd.

This Gooney Bird tale has special brain-warming hats (really underwear), poetry, and the class creating a very special poem for their teacher Mrs. Pidgeon. Read more about Gooney Bird in Gooney Bird Greene, Goodney Bird and the Room Mother, and Gooney the Fabulous.
